Vincent Enyeama: Why I blocked the national football team

Vincent Enyeama, one of Nigeria’s best goalkeepers during his playing days in the Super Eagles, has described how he left the senior national following unbefitting treatment.

Enyeama said he was deeply hurt by the treatment he received for the national team but has moved on from holding any grudges.

The ex-goalkeeper who made his debut for the Super Eagles in 2002 and earned 101 caps for the team, hung his boot in 2015.

In an interview, Enyeama, 41, who stands is arguably among the best goalkeepers the Super Eagles ever had, said that his departure from the national team was not befitting for a goalkeeper that sacrificed as much as he did.

According to him, the treatment meted to him made him block the team so that he would not have any form of access.

“I have not been following Nigerian football since I left. I don’t watch the team any more. I have moved on despite all that I suffered.

“I was treated and rubbished like a piece of used material, so I put up a block between me and the national team.

“I was deeply hurt but now I am really at ease. I have moved, I’ve changed chapters, I’ve changed the page.

According to him, “I am beginning to follow what is going on but I really put a stop to watching football or watching the national team.”
