THE Taiwanese Ambassador in Nigeria, Vincent Yang has presented about 50,000 medical masks to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to support the Federal Government’s efforts at containing the COVID-19.
During the presentation of the masks on Friday, Yang told the Head of NCDC Lagos office, Mrs Olajumoke Babatunde, that the Taiwanese government would soon send another consignment of 100,000 masks to Nigeria.
The envoy of Government of the Republic of China (Taiwan), noted that the masks is support for government’s efforts at containing the raging pandemic, as he said that Taiwan was willing “to share her experience on the control of COVID-19 with Nigeria, in the spirit of ‘Taiwan can help and Taiwan is helping.’
”This first phase of masks are intended to meet the urgent need of masks by frontline medical personel and other relevant groups.”
Yang said that Taiwan has so far been able to contain the transmission of the virus and minimise its effects on people and their daily activities, as the country had transparently implemented preventive measures through a democratic model.
According to the envoy, after its success in the containment of COVID-19, Taiwan “has been reaching out to friendly countries to share her successes in the fight against the pandemic.
”The Government has since April embarked on international humanitarian assistance in response to the COVID-19 outbreak.
”Taiwan has been donating over 16 million medical masks and other medical supplies to the US, Europe and allies.”
Yang adding that no single country could fight against the pandemic and he showed the readiness of his country to cooperate with other countries in containing the spread of COVID-19.
Babatunde offered government’s appreciation for the donation while promising to communicate the gesture to the Director General of NCDC.
She assured that with the government’s and NCDC’s ongoing efforts, Nigeria would soon record great success in containing the virus.
She embraced the need for the NCDC and the envoy to develop a synergy for information sharing and exchanges in the near future.
