EBONYI State Governor David Umahi has assured that those who attacked a bullion van and killed four policemen in Ebonyi State will not go unpunished.

The governor’s Special Assistant on Media, Francis Nwaze, said on Thursday in Abakaliki that Umahi said the attack “is a big blow on our corporate essence, and the culprits will never go unpunished.”

The yet to be apprehended gunmen, on Wednesday killed four policemen along Ezzamgbo axis of Abakaliki/Enugu expressway as they were escorting a bullion van from Enugu to Ebonyi.

Two other policemen sustained bullet wounds during the attack.

Umahi urged residents to remain calm as the State Police Command was harnessing every intelligence to arrest the culprits.

The statement reads: “It is with great sadness that I received the news of the death of our dear servicemen who died yesterday (Wednesday) while serving our dear country – escorting bullion van from Enugu to Ebonyi State.

“I heartily commiserate with the family of the deceased police officers and the Nigeria Police in general, praying that God grants them the fortitude to bear this colossal loss.”

Earlier, the State Commissioner of Police, Philip Maku confirmed that the robbers trailed the van from Enugu, and were unable to loot the van after killing the escort.

He had said: “They damaged one of the tires of the bullion van but the driver was able to escape with the van. They could not chase the van as the driver was driving towards the military checkpoint.”

He said the Police has launched a massive manhunt for the robbers.
