Workers’ welfare: Ugwuanyi restates commitment to cardinal objective

ENUGU State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi has reassured workers in the state that their welfare remains one of the cardinal objectives of his administration because he regards the workforce as a critical stakeholder in the state’s progress and development.

During the opening ceremony, Tuesday, of the 2019 Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) National Leadership Retreat held at the Nike Lake Resort Hotel, Enugu, the Governor added that the government has not faltered in the prompt and regular payment of worker salaries, allowances and pensions

He said that his administration has also kept faith with the initiative of paying the 13th Month salary to its workforce in appreciation of their hard work and productivity in the year.

Reassuring the state workers of a better deal on the issues of wages and enhanced work conditions, Ugwuanyi pointed out that no meaningful progress can be made in the implementation of government policies without the active collaboration and cooperation of the workers.

“As a government, we will continue to do everything possible and practicable to sustain workers welfare, the wonderful relationship that exists between the state government and the organized labour,” the governor said.

Commending the national leadership of NLC for organizing the retreat, the governor noted that such an exercise was central to capacity building, agenda setting and redirecting leadership focus on issues, trends and challenges of the times.

He expressed delight that the retreat has brought together the state councils to chart common goals with the national leadership, saying: “I am confident that at the end of the retreat, the participants would be further enriched by the plenary lectures, interactive and policy sessions from the eminent resource persons that the congress has assembled.”

The the NLC President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba described Ugwuanyi as a labour-friendly governor, which he has further displayed through his presence at the event as he hailed his hospitality and the serenity of the state.

He admitted that the retreat was necessitated by the need to for reorientation, familiarization and capacity building for the new leadership against the background of the experiences of past years and contemporary happenings.
