ALGON chairman faults invasion of Umahi’s residence

By Nnamdi Obi Abakaliki: THE Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Ebonyi State has described the invasion of the Abuja residence of the state governor, David Umahi by unknown hoodlums as sad, barbaric and evil.

The Association, in a statement by its Chairman, Princess Nkechi Inyioku and stated that the invasion was a clear indication that all was not well with the security infrastructure in the country.

Inyioku stated that the attack was worrisome and an obvious laxity on the point of security. She harped on the need for security agencies to close ranks, shun ethnic and tribal sentiments while discharging their fundamental roles of protecting lives and property.

She lamented that security has become a national issue “and situations where no one feels secure means that not only will we lose our humanity, government will have its integrity questioned on its fundamental responsibility to its citizens.”

The chairman noted that the attack is ironic especially as it was coming after the South East Governors, led by Umahi, had taken far reaching decisions on the security of the zone especially as it regards the movement of armed herdsmen across communities and state in the geopolitical zone.

The South East Governors Forum (SEGF) had identified the movement of armed herdsmen and their cattle through farmlands as the cause of frequent clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the region.

The ALGON Chairman, who is also the Chairman of Ohaozara local government area, was expressed sadness over the incident, adding that “this is regrettable.”

According to her, “Nigeria could just be seriously drifting from her democratic culture to anarchy; a situation where the people are no longer safe and their fundamental rights trampled upon.”

As a matter of necessity, she call on the National Assembly, critical stakeholders, the security agencies, to investigate the incident, condemn it in its entirety and bring the invaders to book.
