THE global internet giant, Google, is training over 150 Abia youths on the use of digital platforms to boost businesses, as part of its commitment to the development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in African countries.

In addition, Google has agreed to set up 20 internet platforms in Abia to provide free internet services to business clusters.

As part of the plan to grow SMEs in Africa, a Google team was in Abia in for the start of the Google SME Community Launch, a platform that provides Google ICT backbone to support small businesses, and give them a global visibility through free internet support facilities.

The leader of the team, Seember Nyager, said, “this is part of the global commitment of Google to the growth and development of SMEs across the world.”

According to the team, the youths who have received Google’s free internet training were now Google Certified Internet Programmers and would be deployed to different business clusters in Aba to train small business owners on the use of digital platforms to expand the scope of their businesses.

Nyager said, Nigeria and Kenya were selected as pilot for Google’s project in Africa. He also noted that in Nigeria, the cities of Aba, Lagos and Kaduna were selected for the programme.

Nyager, also Google’s Africa Lead, Public Policy and Government Affairs, disclosed that Aba was selected because of the efforts of the state governor in putting the commercial city on the global map of entrepreneurship and development of SMEs. He urged the State Government to support the scheme for the benefit of Abians.

The Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu assured the delegation that his administration would embrace every genuine support from development partners and institutions towards developing the state economy.

At the official launch of the program in Aba, the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Chris Ezem, represented the state governor.
