THE Anambra State governor, Willie Obiano has appointed a new Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the state-owned University Teaching Hospital.

The new CMD and former Commissioner for Health, Dr Joe Akabike, succeeds Dr Basil Nwankwo, who passed on recently as the CMD of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH).

Obialo, in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof Solo Chukwulobelu, expressed sadness over the death of Nwankwo.

The statement noted that governor was “saddened by the passing of Dr. Basil Nwankwo, who performed creditably well as Chief Medical Director (CMD) of COOUTH.

“Nwankwo has been in the frontline together with his colleagues at Amaku, Anambra State Ministry of Health, and other partner agencies, saving lives since the outbreak of Covid-19.”

Meanwhile, Dr. Simeon Onyemaechi, who was until now the Executive Secretary of Anambra State Health Insurance Agency (ASHIA), was appointed Chairman of Anambra State College of Health Technology, Obosi. He succeeded Akabike.
