THE All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) in Anambra State has described as unfortunate and irresponsible, media reports ascribed to the All Progressive Congress (APC), blaming the State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano for the death of a 66-year-old COVID-19 patient.
In a statement attributed to the APC State Publicity Secretary, Okelo Madukaife, “Anambra APC regrets Covid-19 death, Resurgence,” the party criticized the state governor for blaming on the dead patient for causing his death.
Madukaife had urged the governor and his government to take responsibility instead of faulting the dead, who is not in a position to tell his own side of the story.
The state publicity secretary of APGA, Chinedu Nkwonta in an interview, faulted the fact that APC was using the death of the COVID-19 patient to seek cheap political points.
According to Nkwonta, the APGA led state government has remained committed to the containment of the spread of coronavirus in the state.
Nkwonta warned that critics have to be mindful when discussing issues that are relate to the lives of people, and not use such sensitive issues to “play politics.”
The governor, he said has the responsibility of protecting the lives of the people of Anambra and “of course the government has done a lot to make sure that the facilities needed to protect the people during these perilous times are in place.
“The government has set up two health centres for testing of persons for coronavirus and the state is providing palliatives for the people, taking care of the old and vulnerable.”
Describing as irresponsible the act of blaming Obiano for the death of a COVID-19 patient in Anambra, the publicity secretary wondered, “what about other states or nations where lives have been lost? Are political opposition blaming the leaders for negligence?
“I am only saying this to make it clear that we should be mindful of what we call politics. There is a statement that borders on wickedness and irresponsibility.
“We should as a people come together to support the government and not play politics as we pray for no more deaths. APC should be mindful of its uterances because the loss of a soul due to COVID-19 infection is not a political issue.”
