Onitsha: Kenyans dominate first City marathon

KENYAN athletes, Bernard Sang, 39, and Esther Chesand, 25, beat all comers to win the male and female categories of the maiden Onitsha City international marathon held in Onitsha, Anambra State Saturday.

Sand won the 21 kilometers race in 1.4:44secs

Emmanuel Pam and Fadekemi Olude from Plateau State came tops as male and female champions of Nigerian in the nationality category. In the overall standing, Pam finished in the 10th position.

William Amposah from Ghana, who finished overall fifth was first West African to breast the tape.

Augustine Nwafor was the first runner from Onitsha to finish the race which started at 6:30 a.m.

Ironically, no official of the Anambra State Government or an official of the State Sports Development Commission was present at the start point of the event or at the finishing line to receive and cheer the athletes.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), while the marathon was going on, the state Sports Commission was holding its monthly Walk for Life from Nteje Oyi council area to Aguleri in Anambra East Council.
