Probe: Wabara, Mantu head PDP panel on NASS leadership election

IN the aftermath of the election of the presiding officers of the National Assembly, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) has set up a fact-finding committee to probe the role played by some of its members during the polls.

A statement issued Monday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr Kola Ologbondiyan, in Abuja, the members of the committee include a former President of the Senate, Sen. Adolphus Wabara, (Chairman), the party’s  former National Secretary, Prof. Wale Oladipo, (Secretary).

Other members are: Senator Ibrahim Mantu, Mrs Margaret Icheen, Mr Austin Opara, Senator Stella Omu and Senator Abdul Ningi.

According to Ologbondiyan, the committee was given three weeks to report to probe why some of the PDP lawmakers failed to abide by the decision of the party during the National Assembly leadership election.

Ahead of the June 11 inauguration of the 9th National Assembly, the PDP  announced its endorsement of Senator Ali Ndume for Senate President and Umar Bago as Speaker of House of Representatives.

The party’s National Secretary, Sen. Umar Tsauri, had explained that the decision was reached at the end of a meeting of members of the party’s NWC, party leaders, state governors as well as National Assembly members-elect on the platform of the PDP.

Tsauri said the decision was in line with the party’s determination to deepen democracy, ensure a strong and independent legislature and the lawmakers- elect were advised to be guided accordingly.

At the end of the election, the preferred choice of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Ahmed Lawan, (President of the Senate) and Femi Gbajabiamila (Speaker of the House of Representatives), emerged, against the plans of PDP.

The PDP is desirous of finding out if the outcome was with any involvement of the ruling party as regards of the decision taken by the members involved.

Also, it is “to find out where there are established reasons for taking the action by members, the committee should identify such so that the party can create mutual and political atmosphere for reasonable interaction with senators and Honourable members.

“To find out and recommend ways to checkmate such tendencies in the future and ensure that, moving forward, all members work together to defend the interest of the party at all times and circumstances.”
