THE Imo State governor, Emeka Ihedioha has urged Nigerians to stand by the motive for affirming June 12 as democracy day and a national public holiday.
According to him, the new democracy day stands for free, fair election and electoral integrity in Nigerian history.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on Monday signed the bill declaring June 12 as Democracy Day and public holiday and in the process annulled May 29 previously celebrated as the democracy day.
Ihedioha, in a press statement in Owerri, Wednesday by his Chief Press Secretary Mr Chibuike Onyeukwu, stated that the circumstances that led to institutionalizing June 12 as democracy day marked a watershed in the history of Nigeria’s political development.
Felicitating with Nigerians on the celebration of our new democracy day, he said that he prays “that Nigerians will uphold the integrity of June 12.
“This development, no doubt has given meaning and context to Nigerian political history and development. Let’s always remember that June 12 epitomizes the unbreakable will of the people in the face of tyranny.”
