2019 polls: 8.5m set to cast their votes in South East

    ABOUT 8.5 million permanent voters cards (PVCs) were collected in the five states in the South East ahead of the presidential and National Assembly elections on Saturday February 23.

    According to figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) ahead of the election, the numbers in the zone significantly increased by 1,968,879 or 29.73%  from the 6,621,541 PVCs collected in the zone in 2015. 

    FThe number of PVCs collected in the zone means then that the zone will experience more votes cast than what prevailed in 2015, with the additional 1,968,879 new voters. The number of PVCs collected in 2019 in the zone is 8,590,420.

    Anambra State maintained its ranking as the state with the highest number of registered voters and the highest number of PVCs collected in the zone. The state has 2,447,996 registered voters and 2,071,714 collected PVCs.

    Ebonyi State has the lowest number of registered voters in the zone. The state  has 1,459,933 registered voters and 1,299,048 PVCs were collected. This is a sharp increase in the number of those who collected PVCs in the state for the 2015 polls. In 2015 only 848,392 or 78.97% of the 1,074,273 registered voters collected their PVCs in the state.

    Imo State has the lowest PVCs collection in the zone. Although it’s 2,272,293 registered voters is the second highest number of registered voters in the zone, after Anambra, only 1,702,178 or 74.91% of PVCs were collected. This is a sharp contrast to the scenario in 2015, when of the 1,803,030 registered voters, 1,707,449 or 94.70% of PVCs were collected in the state.

    Enugu State has the highest rate of PVCs compliance in the zone. With a base of 1,944,016 registered voters, 1,787,537 or 91.95% collected their PVCs.
